About The Book

The Perfumed Garden is an ancient Arabic text on human sexual behavior believed to have been written by the 15th-century Tunisian author Shaykh Nafzawi. Richard Francis Burton a British explorer and translator published an English translation of the text in 1886. The text is structured as a series of dialogues between a man and a woman exploring topics such as sexual positions foreplay and erotic fantasies. Like The Kama Sutra The Perfumed Garden is more than just a manual of sexual practices and includes chapters on love marriage and family life. Burtons translation of The Perfumed Garden caused controversy at the time as Victorian society was highly conservative and sexually repressed. The text was seen as pornographic and immoral and its publication was met with criticism from moralists and religious leaders. However Burton argued that the text was an important cultural artifact providing valuable insight into the sexual practices and attitudes of the Arab world. Today The Perfumed Garden remains an important work in the history of human sexuality and a valuable source of insight into the cultural and social practices of the Arab world. Burtons translation is still widely read and studied and the text continues to be a subject of fascination and debate. However it should be noted that the text reflects the cultural and historical context in which it was written and may not necessarily be representative of contemporary attitudes and practices.
