The Phantom of the Opera

<p><em>The Phantom of the Opera</em> by Gaston Leroux is a gothic mystery novel set in the Paris Opera House. It tells the story of a mysterious disfigured musical genius known as the Phantom who lives in the catacombs beneath the opera. He becomes obsessed with the young singer Christine Daaé helping her rise to fame while demanding her love in return. Christine however is torn between fear of the Phantom and her love for her childhood friend Raoul. The Phantom's jealousy and desire lead to tragic events forcing Christine to confront his humanity and compassion despite his darkness.
