The pictorial blur at Sarah Moon

About The Book

The influence of pictoriality on fashion photography seems to find its echo in the following comment It looks like a painting. An expression that has been repeated many times in front of a fashion or art photo. Having a very striking visual effect the pictorial notions that have been expressed in fashion photos are summarized in the elements that characterize painting from other plastic expressions. In fact we must turn to an old relationship that was between painting and art photography in its early days. A relationship of influence and attachment since the majority of the so-called plastic photographers were painters before experimenting with this new technique for artistic and plastic purposes. Indeed this relationship is clearly manifested in the pictorialism movement which had the ambition to inscribe photography as an art form inspired by the impressionist painters. These pictorialists expounded their theories based on a refusal of magnification and sharpness and seeking the blur of the image to give a better rendering of perception.
