One of the most inventive poets of the nineteenth century was Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844–89). His tragically brief life was marked by a struggle to balance his artistic and religious callings and this edition shows the breadth of his interests. It comprises all his poetry from best-known pieces such as 'The Wreck of the Deutschland' and The Windhover' through translations foreign language poems dramas and verse fragments and the recently discovered poem 'Consule Jones'. Hopkins also included passages from his journals letters and spiritual writings.
