The novella is set in the fictional town of Llanstaff in Wales and revolves around the tragic story of a woman named Lucy. Lucy is a young woman who becomes the object of affection for two very different men: Marmaduke a wealthy landowner and Walter a poor and humble farmer. Lucy is torn between her love for the two men and the social expectations that come with her station in life.The title The Poor Clare is a reference to Clare of Assisi the founder of the Poor Clares a Catholic religious order known for its vow of poverty. The character of Lucy is associated with the idea of self-sacrifice and poverty as she grapples with her choices and their consequences.As with many of Gaskell's works The Poor Clare explores the complexities of human relationships the constraints of social norms and the moral dilemmas faced by its characters.
