About the Book: Money laundering as a criminal offense gained international legal recognition in 1986 when the United States enacted the Money Laundering Control Act setting a global precedent. In 1989 the G7 nations established the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) to develop international standards against money laundering. India responded with its own legislative framework through the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) 2002 which came into force on 1st July 2005. The PMLA is the central law aimed at combating the laundering of proceeds from crime empowering the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to investigate attach and confiscate tainted assets. This book offers a detailed legal analysis of the PMLA and related laws including the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act 1985 Benami Transactions (Prohibition) Act 1988 FEMA 1999 and Income Tax Act 1961 among others. It also explores intersections with the Companies Act 2013 IPC 1860 and UAPA 1967 especially in cases involving terror financing. To aid law students and young professionals the book features real-life case studies and landmark judicial precedents illustrating how courts have interpreted and applied anti-money laundering laws. About the Author: Dr. Jasdeep Kaur is an advocate legal educator and courtroom crusader with over a decade of experience in family law and social justice. A native of Delhi she completed her B.A. (Hons) in English from Delhi University followed by an LL.B. and an LL.M. in Corporate Governance and Banking Laws from GGSIPU. She enrolled with the Bar Council of Delhi in 2015 and began her legal career with the Department of Women and Child Development as a Legal Officer working to strengthen protections for women and children. Dr. Kaur earned her Ph.D. in Family Law from Amity University Jaipur. Her research focused on domestic violence and forms the basis of this book which examines the issue through legal historical international and empirical lenses with a focus on New Delhi. Since 2019 she has served as Legal Aid Counsel with the Delhi State Legal Services Authority promoting access to justice for marginalized groups. As part-time faculty at NIPCCD and the Delhi Police Academy she has trained thousands of professionals on gender rights juvenile justice and legal aid. A certified mediator and published researcher Dr. Kaur is committed to making the law more accessible empathetic and empowering.
