The Principality of Liechtenstein in the Process of European Integration

About The Book

Europe has been going through an economic and political reconfiguration in the second part of the last century one of the results being the expansion of a huge regional trading bloc the European Union (EU). In this process micro-states play only a peripheral role however they constantly strive for acceptance and acknowledgment of their existence and sovereignty. Therefore strong links with their neighbours are essential to the survival of these very small states. Nevertheless the case study shows that acting independently on international level without relying on its partners can also lead to remarkable results. In the case of Liechtenstein this finds its expression particularly in the accession of the Principality to the European Economic Area (EEA). Yet the future relationship between Liechtenstein and the EU seems to be unclear although several options exist at least in theory. This book can be recommended to students of Political Science and International Relations and all those interested in the process of European Integration.
