The Principles of Art is a 1937 treatise by R. G. Collingwood that explores the nature of art and its relationship with history and philosophy in particular. Robin George Collingwood FBA (1889 - 1943) was an English historian philosopher and archaeologist most famous for his philosophical works including Outlines of a Philosophy of Art (1925) and the posthumously-published The Idea of History (1946). One of his more well-known works The Principles of Art constitutes an interesting and detailed examination of the very idea of art-what it is what it does and what it means.
