The novel is a classic of early science fiction and it has been praised for its imaginative plot and its exploration of the ethical implications of scientific progress. However it has also been criticized for its stereotypical characters and its simplistic portrayal of science. The novel is the first in a three-part series. The other two volumes are titled The Professor's Experiment: A Novel Vol. 2 (of 3) and The Professor's Experiment: A Novel Vol. 3 (of 3). The novel is not currently in print but it is available to read online for free at Project Gutenberg.
