The profile of opportunistic infections among patients with AIDS

About The Book

The study highlights the profile of opportunistic infections (OIs) determine associations between OIs and some determinants among patients with AIDS (CD4<200cells/mm3) on antiretroviral therapy (ART) at a clinic in northern Nigeria. This was achieved through a retrospective secondary analysis of existing data obtained from the clinic’s electronic database of patients who started ART treatment between 2006 and 2010 with AIDS (CD4<200cells/mm3). Women made up 59% and mean age was 38.6±0.46years. 47.7% of the study cohort of patients who had an OI at month 0 with Pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) being the most occurring OI; and a positive associated being WHO stage and OIs at month 0 (OR =>1.0). At month 12 there was a statistically significant decreased in the occurrence of OIs from month 0; and previous ART exposure was significant associated with the occurrence of OIs. All other factors were found not to be associated with OIs. There was a significant improvement in Immune status for most for patients with higher CD4 counts at month0. 3 OIs (PTB Oral candidiasis and Diarrhea/Wasting Syndrome) were found to occur in most patients.
