The reed fish is sparsely distributed and restricted to few African waters. In Nigeria they are found mostly in Ogun Queme Niger and Cross River systems. They are assessed as “near threatened” owing to habitat degradation and loss due to deforestation agriculture urban development and oil palm plantations in the coastal regions. They are “vulnerable” in Western Africa and “endangered” in Central Africa. Nevertheless scientific information on the biology and ecology of E. calabaricus is limited. This book written for fisheries ecologists and biologists provides baseline data on this threatened fish species and its potential for efficient management and exploitation.
