The Reign of Greed is José Rizal's second novel. First published in 1891 in Spanish the novel is about politically and historically driven fictional Philippines during the Spanish colonial period inspired by the writer's living conditions views beliefs and ideologies under the Spanish rule. Thirteen years after leaving the Philippines Crisostomo Ibarra returns as Simoun a rich jeweler sporting a beard and blue-tinted glasses and a confidant of the Captain-General. In disguise he travels the world amassing wealth which he intends to use to topple the corrupt and abusive regime in his native land. But Simoun's real motive is personal.
