Lawford returns home but his wife and children do not recognize him. He is accused of being an imposter and thrown out of his house. He then seeks help from a friend Herbert Herbert who believes his story and tries to help him find a solution.Lawford eventually learns more about Sabathier who was a Huguenot immigrant who died in the 17th century. Sabathier was a passionate and rebellious man and Lawford begins to feel his spirit possessing him. He becomes more and more like Sabathier both in appearance and personality.Lawford eventually decides to leave his family and friends and start a new life in London. He becomes a successful writer but he is haunted by Sabathier's spirit. He eventually realizes that he must confront Sabathier in order to be free.In the end Lawford goes back to the graveyard and confronts Sabathier's spirit. He tells Sabathier that he is no longer afraid of him and that he is his own man. Sabathier's spirit disappears and Lawford is finally free.
