By the late 21st century Earth has established an International Academy of Astronautics where members are genetically engineered before birth to become exemplary astronauts. Among them a young woman stands out-she has been trained her entire life for a daring mission: to be the first woman to give birth on Mars.There the authorities and scientists overseeing the project-closely tied to a pseudo-religious group whose beliefs center on the pursuit of immortality-conceal their true intentions from the future mother. As part of a conspiracy Numen is born: a being with a consciousness far superior to that of its peers. This extraordinary child will alter daily life in the human colony on Mars' base-and perhaps even the fate of humanity itself.
