The Rivals A Comedy

About The Book

The plot centers on the romantic pursuits of Lydia Languish a young woman obsessed with the notion of eloping for love rather than marrying for wealth or status. She becomes the object of affection for Captain Jack Absolute who adopts the guise of a poor ensign to win her love on her terms. Meanwhile Lydia is also pursued by two other suitors: the vain Bob Acres and the belligerent Sir Lucius O’Trigger leading to a series of comical misunderstandings. The complications are heightened by the meddling of Lydia’s guardian the domineering yet endearing Mrs. Malaprop whose humorous misuse of language has made her one of literature’s most memorable characters. The play’s humor derives from its intricate plotting exaggerated characters and sharp social commentary. Themes of love social class and the absurdities of romantic idealism are woven into the story with Sheridan using satire to expose the follies of his characters. Mrs. Malaprop’s malapropisms in particular provide a comedic highlight as her attempts at sophistication result in delightful linguistic blunders.
