How does the man made environment affect the designof urban life and its customs? The book concentrateson the interaction between man and his settlementwithin the context of the Roman city in Asia Minorduring the imperial period. The analysis is carriedout by examining the role of the nymphaea within thecontext of urban architecture. Within the Roman urbancontext the nymphaea are treated as landmarks for mentally mapping the city and as urban furniturein a properly functioning urban public sphere.Considering their role in the public sphere as aresult it is seen that the location of the nymphaeawithin the city was not always dependent on thelocation of water sources. They were often locatedalong the armature to be visible and memorable.Therefore as an urban element influencing publicactivity the nymphaea contributed to civicconsciosnes and the making of livable and 'legible'cities.
