Vincenza is an Italian volunteer doctor. In Guatemala after a year of work on February 22 1995 she survives an assassination attempt: bullet fragments hit her head. She lives by a miracle and returns to Italy. A few months later she discovers she is pregnant. Her family of origin from a small town in southern Italy does not accept her condition and disowns her. Vincenza by her own choice does not marry the father breaks with her family and decides to raise her daughter alone: a very sweet little girl she names Emily. For about twenty years she cares for people in some of the poorest areas of the world: Tanzania Mozambique Angola Brazil... She returns to Italy Emily is now grown up Vincenza works in a public hospital and writes her biography: a story of desperate and ancient love that Vincenza offers to her patients and demands from her lovers full and indispensable. A story in which love is always a matter of life or death.
