The Rover

The Rover is set in the south of France during the aftermath of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars. The novel follows the story of Peyrol an aging former privateer (a rover) who has spent much of his life at sea. After years of adventurous and often morally ambiguous exploits Peyrol seeks peace and retirement in a remote farmhouse near Toulon. Peyrol despite his desire for a quiet life finds himself entangled in a web of political intrigue and personal conflict. The story unfolds against the backdrop of the revolutionary fervor and the ongoing conflict between Royalists and Republicans in France. Peyrol’s past as a privateer and his skills as a seaman make him valuable to various factions leading to his reluctant involvement in a dangerous mission.
