The School for Husbands

The play explores the dynamics of marriage and the balance of power between husbands and wives. It centers around two brothers Ariste and Sganarelle who have different views on how to treat their wives. Ariste is kind and trusting toward his wife Isabelle while Sganarelle is strict and overprotective with his wife Léonore. The plot develops as Ariste tries to convince Sganarelle that his overbearing and authoritarian approach to marriage will lead to disaster while Ariste’s more lenient and understanding treatment of Isabelle fosters trust and affection. Meanwhile the women Isabelle and Léonore struggle with their husbands' contrasting approaches and seek to find their own ways of asserting their independence and happiness.
