Since the second half of the 20th century science has shown us a Universe that is not finished but in permanent creation. On the other hand various disciplines that analyze the development of knowledge indicate that construction dominates over discovery. These two considerations make us realize that our image of the Universe may be more flexible than previously thought and that therefore the aspiration of a world guided by humanistic values can find a place in our scientific construction of reality. From an epistemological point of view we can say that we are facing a rise of constructivism. However we still cannot do without the possibility of realism. This epistemological current tell us which reality exists independently of us. Otherwise we would fall into an extreme relativism. Realism does not build or invent and so some have come to the conclusion that inherent values to humanism for example compassion beauty or wisdom cannot be extracted from the facts.
