About The Book

The Scribe of Persecution

In 1589 Edinburgh clerk Thomas Blackwood is appointed to document Scotland's witch trials after King James VI narrowly survives a storm at sea. Initially a true believer Blackwood develops systematic interrogation protocols and torture methodologies that achieve a 94% confession rate. Over fifteen years he trains hundreds of witch finders and meticulously documents approximately 4000 executions.

As the body count rises Blackwood's certainty crumbles. A palace servant reveals that Agnes Sampson's supernatural knowledge-the cornerstone confession-was merely palace gossip. His systematic review of evidence exposes circular accusations contaminated testimonies and confessions extracted through unbearable torture. Yet despite knowing the trials are corrupt Blackwood continues serving the machinery he built paralyzed by fear and complicity.

The King departs for England in 1603 exporting Scottish methods. A new generation of witch finders trained by Blackwood exceeds his zealotry. Dying in 1605 Blackwood writes a comprehensive confession acknowledging his crimes and hides it behind a stone wall.

The documents remain hidden for 387 years until discovered in 1992 finally revealing the truth: Scotland's witch hunt was systematic persecution enabled by effective torture documented as legitimate justice by a man who ultimately understood exactly what he had built.
