The Story Is Narrated By An Unnamed Protagonist Who Recounts The History Of The Titular Shunned House Located At 135 Benefit Street In Providence Rhode Island—A Real Location Known To Lovecraft. The House Has A Long History Of Mysterious Deaths Illnesses And Inexplicable Occurrences That Have Led It To Be Avoided And Feared By The Local Community. The Narrator Intrigued By The House'S Ominous Reputation Decides To Investigate Its History Alongside His Uncle Dr. Elihu Whipple An Antiquarian And Local Historian. Through Their Research They Uncover A Series Of Unsettling Events Associated With The House'S Previous Occupants. Many Of The Residents Suffered From Inexplicable Illnesses Madness And Premature Deaths Leading To The Suspicion That The House Itself Is Cursed Or Haunted. The Most Notable Figure Connected To The House Is A French Huguenot Settler Named Etienne Roulet Who Moved Into The House In The Late 17Th Century. Strange Occurrences Began Shortly After Roulet'S Arrival Leading To Rumors That He Was Involved In Necromancy Or Other Occult Practices.
