<p>In America the first slaves in great numbers were Caucasian called Indentured Servants. Indentured Servitude began in the U.S. in the 1600s in Virginia when wealthy owners of land paid the passage for Irish and other European laborers to come to America. But terrible strings were attached to these agreements which were generally terms of from three to seven years of free labor. Often the work was exceptionally strenuous with long hours and often terrible working and living conditions identical to slavery. During most of the 17th century the Indentured were mostly White English men and women with a few Africans Irish and Indians-all under indenture contracts but having been promised their freedom.
