The Six Systems of Indian Philosophy is a monumental work of Indology published in 1899 by the eminent German philologist and Orientalist Friedrich Max Müller. Written toward the end of his life the book serves as a comprehensive sympathetic survey of the six orthodox schools of Hindu philosophy—known collectively as the Ṣaḍ-darśanas. Max Müller’s primary objective was to demonstrate that rational inquiry was not exclusive to Western civilization and to highlight how deeply connected India's philosophical infrastructure is to its unique national character and religious life
