This publication is intended for undergraduate and graduate students as it deals with the relationship between language and culture in the effective use of language and had for theme the examination of how the sociological concept of face occurs in Chinese culture specifically in Mandarin and how these people express themselves in order to achieve politeness and maintain their social face. For this the comparison parameter used was the way used by the Brazilian culture especially the Portuguese language in effective use in São Paulo to achieve the same goal i.e. the maintenance of social face through the analysis of a Chinese TV series and a Brazilian soap opera.
