The Sport of the Gods

The novel tells the story of the Hamilton family an African American family who live in the South during the late 19th century. Berry Hamilton the father works as a butler for a wealthy white family. He has dreams of providing a better life for his wife Fannie and their children Joe and Kitty. However their dreams are shattered when Berry loses his job due to a false accusation made by his employer. With no means to support his family Berry decides to move them to New York City hoping to find better opportunities there. They arrive in the city with high hopes but soon realize that life in the North is not as promising as they thought. They face racism poverty and struggle to make ends meet. As the story progresses the Hamiltons face numerous challenges and setbacks. Joe the eldest son falls into bad company and becomes involved in criminal activities. Kitty the daughter tries to pursue her education but faces discrimination and limited opportunities. Fannie the mother struggles to keep her family together amidst the hardships they face. The Sport of the Gods explores themes of racial prejudice economic inequality and the resilience of the human spirit. It portrays the harsh realities faced by African Americans during that time period and highlights the power dynamics and injustices prevalent in society.
