As their father is away on business Beverley and his brother Felix have moved in with their aunt Janet and uncle Alec King to live on their farm. They enjoy their free time with their cousins Dan Felicity and Cecily King the hired lad Peter Craig Sara Ray their neighbour and Sara Stanley another cousin. The latter is the Story Girl of the title and she captivates the group with captivating tales about numerous historical incidents involving the Royal family. The two stories that make up the book are those of Beverley King and his buddies as well as those that the Story Lady tells.
