Emmaline Sparks describes herself as a story hunter. She has made a name for herself as a novelist by hunting for and finding the stories of the powerless that the powerful don't want told.

Abby Woods wants to become a story hunter too like her grandma.

Abby thinks her grandma and her dog a black German Shepherd are really something more. Maybe even a witch and a wolf. Her grandmother isn't like a normal grandmother and her dog isn't like a normal dog. And she isn't sure how to put a dragon in but she knows there will be one.

As her sixth-grade school year ends Abby is studying hard so she can win the spelling bee at camp-ship-'em-off. Emmaline is helping her. But Emmaline is also trying to help Abby make some changes so she can make a start fresh at Junior High in the fall and not repeat the mistakes she's made during the year. She can start by making those changes at camp.

But a returned deposit from the camp means a change of plans and not just for Abby.

Abby doesn't mind. She's going to be a story hunter. And she knows just whose story she will be hunting.
