About The Book

The Story of the Odyssey by Alfred J. Church is a retelling of the classic epic poem The Odyssey attributed to Homer. The narrative follows the Greek hero Ulysses (Odysseus in Greek) as he attempts to return home to Ithaca after the fall of Troy. The story begins with the gods discussing Ulysses' fate as he is held captive by the nymph Calypso on her island. Despite the gods' intervention particularly Athene's Ulysses faces numerous challenges on his journey. He is shipwrecked and must build a raft to escape Calypso's island. As he sails Poseidon the god of the sea creates a storm to thwart him. Ulysses is aided by the sea goddess Ino who provides him with a magical veil to keep him safe. Meanwhile his son Telemachus urged by Athene sets out to find news of his father visiting Nestor in Pylos and Menelaus in Sparta. The suitors vying for Penelope's hand plot against Telemachus but he is protected by the gods. The narrative weaves together the themes of divine intervention human resilience and the longing for home and family. Church's adaptation captures the essence of the original epic making it accessible to a modern audience while preserving its timeless themes.
