About The Book

This thesis examines the social structures and power mechanisms that lead to discrimination and marginalisation of the LGBT population in Bogotá. It highlights the boundaries of visibility and invisibility and examines the strategies used to escape the shadow of heteronormativity and homophobia. From a political and legal perspective Colombia has made important and necessary progress towards the integration of these people. The main weaknesses lie in the socio-cultural transformations taking place in the country. It is shown that imaginaries and old stereotypes from the Catholic Church conservative forces and patriarchal structures are closely interlinked. The knowledge gained from interviews is related to theoretical discourses on the body identity gender reproduction and discrimination highlighting the challenges opportunities and limitations of all key actors. The empirical analysis mainly incorporates the voices and experiences of LGBT people and consequently also the internal dynamics and strategies of the movement and their impact on people's everyday lives.
