This novel introduces the first of a series of darkly humorous stories following the fortunes and misfortunes of Stumblebum an awkward teenager and his attempts to become a powerful and successful wizard. Stumblebum's journey into magic sees him enjoy both successes and failures as he learns his craft and he experiences some harrowing and sometimes threatening events amongst the mysterious and eccentric people who live in the dysfunctional town of Bilge on Sea.
