The narrative begins with Johnnie Green a young boy who decides to start a butterfly collection posing a threat to Betsy and her fellow butterflies. Despite the danger Betsy remains unperturbed relying on her quick reflexes and a bit of luck to escape capture. The story unfolds with various characters such as Mrs. Ladybug who is envious of Betsy's beauty and spreads rumors about her. Mrs. Ladybug's jealousy leads to a series of misunderstandings including a false accusation that Betsy is stealing butter and eggs from Farmer Green. This accusation is eventually debunked revealing the true nature of the butter-and-eggs plant in the meadow. Betsy also encounters Joseph Bumble a boastful newcomer who claims to be of royal lineage and a cousin to Buster Bumblebee. However his deceit is uncovered during a party where Buster Bumblebee himself exposes Joseph as a fraud. Throughout these events Betsy remains kind-hearted and polite even when faced with adversity. The tale also introduces Dusty Moth a nocturnal creature who becomes infatuated with Betsy after hearing about her beauty. Despite his efforts to meet her Betsy's preference for daylight keeps them apart. The story highlights themes of beauty jealousy and the importance of staying true to oneself amidst challenges.
