The Tale of Turkey Proudfoot

About The Book

The Tale of Turkey Proudfoot by Arthur Scott Bailey is a charming story set on a farm focusing on the life and antics of Turkey Proudfoot a vain and self-important turkey. The narrative explores Turkey Proudfoot's interactions with other farm animals highlighting his pride and the challenges he faces due to his arrogance. The story begins with Turkey Proudfoot's strutting and his belief in his superiority especially regarding his magnificent tail which he believes is unmatched on the farm. However his vanity is tested when he encounters six geese who are unimpressed by his grandeur and even hiss at him challenging his authority. The plot thickens with the arrival of a new pet a peacock whose tail is even more splendid than Turkey Proudfoot's. This encounter deeply unsettles Turkey Proudfoot as he grapples with feelings of jealousy and inadequacy. Despite his attempts to assert dominance the peacock's indifference and the admiration it receives from other animals leave Turkey Proudfoot feeling overshadowed. Throughout the story Turkey Proudfoot's interactions with other characters such as the rooster Henrietta Hen and Mr. Grouse reveal his struggles with pride and the consequences of his behavior. His encounter with Mr. Grouse in the woods introduces the concept of being a game bird which further challenges Turkey Proudfoot's perception of himself. The narrative concludes with a dramatic moment when Turkey Proudfoot narrowly escapes an attack by Tommy Fox thanks to Mr. Grouse's warning highlighting the importance of humility and the value of allies.
