The play tells the story of Prospero the rightful Duke of Milan who has been exiled to a remote island along with his daughter Miranda. The play is set on this island where Prospero uses his magical powers to manipulate the other characters and bring about his own redemption. The plot revolves around the arrival of a ship carrying several of Prosperos former enemies including his brother Antonio who usurped his position as Duke and left him and Miranda to die on the island. Using his powers Prospero causes a storm that shipwrecks the passengers on the island. From there he orchestrates a series of events that ultimately lead to the reconciliation and forgiveness of his enemies and the restoration of his rightful place as Duke. The Tempest explores themes of power redemption forgiveness and the relationship between humans and the natural world. It is also noted for its complex characters intricate plot and use of magic and the supernatural.
