About The Book

The Tenth Man is a tragic comedy by W. Somerset Maugham blending humor and pathos to explore themes of fate sacrifice and morality during times of crisis. The play is set during World War II and revolves around a group of hostages taken by the Germans. When one of the captives offers to sacrifice himself in exchange for the freedom of others the dynamics of survival and honor come into play. The central conflict arises when one of the men unable to sacrifice himself lives while another an innocent man takes his place and is executed. Years later the survivor now back in civilian life must confront the consequences of his actions when he crosses paths with the family of the man who died in his place. The play examines the psychological toll of guilt and the moral complexities of making life-and-death decisions.
