About The Book

The main conflict arises from George's efforts to impress his peers and secure a higher place in society through his new title all while dealing with the complications it creates in his relationships with his wife friends and other characters. The comedy comes from the misunderstandings pretensions and contradictions that arise when George's aspirations clash with the reality of his new position as well as the social expectations of those around him. In The Title Bennett blends humor with a sharp critique of the class system using satire to expose the superficiality of titles and the lengths to which individuals will go to gain respect and recognition. As in many of his works Bennett explores how social mobility and the pursuit of status affect personal relationships and individual identity. The play’s witty dialogue and social observations make it an engaging and thought-provoking comedy.
