What moved Abraham to open his home to his young self-absorbed nephew Lot and later to wage war against a powerful alliance of kings to rescue his young charge? What moved Boaz a near kinsman of Ruth to marry her to lift her up out of poverty? What moved Jesus to empty himself of the nature of God and to take upon himself the nature of man—indeed the nature of a servant—to surrender his life on the cross to redeem humankind? What moved them was a sense of allegiance. A sense of family. A sense of tribe.
