The story centers around Tessa and Janet Linton who are the twin daughters of Norah Linton (the protagonist of earlier books in the series). As the novel begins the twins are growing up at Emu Plains a property adjacent to Billabong. The twins are spirited and adventurous much like their mother was in her youth. They become central figures in the story and their personalities and experiences drive much of the narrative. The novel follows their various escapades and challenges as they navigate life on the Australian cattle station. The story explores themes of family friendship and the transition from childhood to adulthood. As the twins grow older they face new responsibilities and experiences reflecting the broader changes in their lives and the world around them.
