The Unclassed

About The Book

The Unclassed follows the life and experiences of the central character Osmond Waymark a young teacher who becomes involved with a variety of individuals from different social classes. The novel explores themes of social class morality and the challenges faced by the characters as they navigate their way through a rapidly changing society. The title The Unclassed alludes to the idea of individuals who do not fit neatly into the established social categories of the time and it highlights the struggle of those who fall outside the norm of Victorian societal expectations.George Gissing was known for his realistic and often critical depictions of the social and economic struggles of the lower and middle classes in late 19th-century England. The Unclassed is an example of his exploration of these themes as well as his focus on the moral and ethical dilemmas faced by his characters. While Gissing's works may not be as widely read today as those of some of his contemporaries they are valued for their portrayal of the social and economic conditions of the time and their examination of the complexities of human relationships and the challenges of personal and societal aspirations.
