The Unclassed

The Unclassed by George Gissing is a novel that explores the lives of individuals who exist on the fringes of Victorian society those who are socially marginalized and do not fit neatly into the rigid class structure of the time.The story primarily follows three main characters: Osmond Waymark a struggling writer and schoolteacher; Julian Casti an idealistic young man; and Ida Starr a woman who has fallen into a life of poverty. Each of these characters embodies the challenges of living in the unclassed stratum of society where they are neither fully accepted by the middle class.Social Marginalization and Poverty are central themes as the characters navigate a world that often excludes them due to their ambiguous social status. Waymark who is dissatisfied with his low-paying teaching job dreams of becoming a successful author but his ambitions are hampered by the harsh realities of his financial situation. Ida who has been forced into a life of hardship struggles to maintain her dignity and find a place where she belongs and The struggle for Identity is a recurring theme as the characters’ attempt to define themselves in a society.
