The White Guard

The White Guard however less well-known than Mikhail Bulgakovs comedic bestseller The Master and Margarita is still a compelling read despite having a very different style. It chronicles the tale of the Turbin family and the impact of the conflict on the middle classes while taking place in Kiev during the Russian Revolution (not workers). Because the tale was not deemed politically proper Bulgakov had ongoing issues with the Soviet government. Yet it was a well-received book and when it was first published in 1967 a successful play was adapted from the book.
