The Woman in White

“The best men are not consistent in good—why should the worst men be consistent in evil?”During a trip to London charming art teacher Walter Hartright encounters a seemingly distraught woman dressed starkly in white who asks him for directions and the sheer bizarreness of the encounter sticks in his mind. He later meets a policeman who informs him that she was an inmate who had escaped from a local asylum.Soon after when Hartright moves to a new teaching position in Cumberland he meets a beautiful young woman named Laura and is staggered as she bears a striking resemblance to the woman he saw in London. They fall for each other but he remains puzzled – who really is Laura and who is her mysterious doppelganger in white? Wilkie Collins was an English author and playwright most famous for his sensational novels often falling under the category of detective fiction especially The Woman in White and The Moonstone. Collins completed his legal studies and passed the bar in 1851 and although he never practiced as a lawyer he drew upon his legal knowledge to further enhance his novels.
