The Works of Edgar Allan Poe Volume 3 is another collection of short stories poems and essays by Edgar Allan Poe. This volume includes some of Poe''s lesser-known works as well as some of his more experimental pieces. One of the most notable stories in this collection is The Pit and the Pendulum a horror story that takes place during the Spanish Inquisition. The story follows an unnamed narrator who is imprisoned and subjected to torture including being strapped to a table while a pendulum swings back and forth above him getting closer and closer to his body with each pass. Another famous story in this collection is The Masque of the Red Death a Gothic tale about a group of wealthy people who try to escape a deadly plague by locking themselves in a castle. However they soon discover that the disease has followed them inside and death awaits them all. Other stories in this collection include The Gold-Bug The Black Cat and The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether. The book also includes several of Poe''s essays and critiques including The Philosophy of Composition in which he explains his process for writing The Raven.
