The Younger Sister follows the story of Emma Watson a young woman who has been raised away from her family in the care of a wealthy aunt. When her aunt remarries and no longer wishes to support her Emma returns to her modest family home to live with her father and siblings. Emma's return to the Watson family introduces her to a new social circle including potential suitors and the complexities of life in a small English town. The novel explores her adjustment to this new life and the relationships she forms particularly the romantic ones.
