Theaetetus

Theaetetus which is set just before Socrates trial and execution in 399 BC depicts the great philosopher debating the nature of knowledge itself with the geometrician Theodorus and his youthful pupil Theaetetus. They discuss a wide range of topics including whether knowledge is simply subjective and made up of the constantly shifting stream of sensations we receive from the outside world. Is true belief a more accurate description? Or is it justified true belief as many contemporary philosophers contend where the belief is backed up by justification or proof? Socrates directs the discussion with skill and eloquence highlighting the ramifications of various views and criticising them harshly and mesmerizingly. This in-depth examination of the knowing problem which was one of the foundational texts of epistemology never ceases to fascinate and motivate.
