Alexander Henry Rhind (1833-63) devoted his short life to antiquarianism. Developing tubercular symptoms he passed the winters of 1855-7 in Egypt where he made the studies recorded in this 1862 book. His account covers both archaeological discoveries and the reuse of the Theban necropolis as homes for modern Egyptians.
