Theoretical foundations of scientific translation

About The Book

What''s the translation? It''s a change of linguistic location or as the proponents of the interpretative model say: deverbalising. As an observer the translator makes markings in the source text along three axes: syntagmatic paradigmatic and semantic. He or she locates semiotics coherent systems of signs. In the translator''s cognitive system the semiotics identified call on target language semiotics that the translator has accumulated in the form of cognitive complements along his or her career as a translator. Another universe is thus constructed by a change of location: this time the semiotics selected take on new dimensions in the target text along three axes: syntagmatic paradigmatic and semantic. In this phase the translator plays the role of a hermeneutist-comparatist. Furthermore since the translation process in practice takes place in translation units (TU) the coherence and cohesion of these units must be constantly checked. At the theoretical level in the long term a metatranslation based on LS and LC must be formed by comparing bilingual semiotic systems: this is the task of specialists and translation institutions.
