There Is Confusion

This historical novel by a key figure in the Harlem Renaissance follows the hopes and dreams of three young African-Americans as they look for love financial stability and success in Philadelphia and New York a century ago: Maggie who is eager to leave her working-class upbringing by marrying well Joanna who is willing to sacrifice romance on the altar of success and Peter a future doctor who is driven by his love for Joanna. The story which was released in 1924 to widespread acclaim provides an insightful look at how black middle-class people battled prejudice and discrimination during a turbulent time.
