About The Book

Thistle and Rose: A Story for Girls by Amy Walton is a gentle narrative that follows the journey of a young girl named Anna. At fifteen Anna is set to leave London as her father embarks on a business trip abroad. With her mother having passed away when she was too young to remember Anna is to stay with her relatives in the countryside specifically at Waverley the home of her Aunt Sarah and Uncle John. The story begins with Anna's excitement and apprehension about her first solo journey to Dornton a small town near Waverley. Her father Mr. Forrest is a distant figure preoccupied with his own affairs leaving Anna to navigate her new environment largely on her own. Upon her arrival Anna is unexpectedly met by a kind farmer Mr. Oswald who offers her a ride to Waverley as her aunt had mistakenly planned to meet her the following day. This initial mix-up sets the tone for Anna's new life filled with both challenges and discoveries. She learns about her grandfather Mr. Goodwin the organist at Dornton church whom she has never met due to a long-standing estrangement between him and her father. Anna's curiosity about her family history and her mother's past grows as she settles into her new surroundings. The narrative explores themes of family belonging and self-discovery as Anna becomes acquainted with her relatives and the local community. She is introduced to a world of new experiences from the beauty of the countryside to the complexities of family dynamics. Through her interactions with her grandfather and the people of Dornton Anna begins to piece together her identity and the legacy of her mother Priscilla Goodwin.
