He joined the Maharashtra police force in 1966 as a sub-inspector and worked in that capacity at Yeotmal and Nagpur districts of Maharashtra. He joined the Intelligence Bureau Govt. of India on deputation in 1976. After working at Aurangabad and Parbhani districts of Maharashtra he was posted in Hyderabad in 1982. In the year 1993 he was selected as a faculty member in the prestigious Intelligence Bureau's training institute at New Delhi the only one of its kind in the country. After his tenure at New Delhi he was posted at Hyderabad in 1996 again where he continued to work till February 2001. He retired as the Addl. Deputy Commissioner of Police from Mumbai. Mr Deshpande has received more than 100 rewards for his distinguished work. Having authored two books Mr Deshpande has published some research oriented papers too. He contributes regularly to different periodicals and newspapers his subjects of special study being Muslim communal organizations national security vis-à-vis ISI activities and Islamic terrorism. Mr Deshpande is a sought after speaker at various police centres in Maharashtra and elsewhere. He is the President of Maharashtra Mandal the state of Telangana.
